Frequently Asked Questions
What is the life expectancy of a Sancell Solar Pool Cover?

Sancell is a wholly Australian owned company, specialising in the manufacture of UV stabilized plastics products. Drawing on more than 30 years of plastics manufacturing experience through our founder, Tim Murray, Sancell Pool Covers was initially set up to manufacture bubble plastics with our own UV stabilising systems. Combined with the highest quality polythene resins, the extruded rolls of high-grade bubble material are fabricated into solar pool covers suited to harsh Australian conditions.

With the addition of thermal materials to our plant's production, we're now Australia's only manufacturer of both solar pool cover and thermal pool cover materials.

However, Pool Covers do have a finite lifespan-and will eventually require replacement.

Remember, your care of the cover will ultimately determine its life.
Typical life expectancies:

Blanket Series

3 year full replacement warranty plus 2 year pro-rata warranty, 6-7 year life expectancy

» What limits the life of a Solar Pool Cover?

The three main contributers to the deteriation of Solar Pool Covers are Chlorine, UV Rays from the sun and the temperature of the pool water. Using an Ioniser, instead of chlorine or salt chlorination, will help to substantially increase the life of your pool cover. For more information go to www.bioniser.com.au.

» What can I do to prolong the life of my Pool Cover?

Reduce your chlorine level, 2 - 2.5ppm maximum, and run your filter during the hottest part of the day. If using a salt chlorinator turn reduce the input by 50%. If manually dosing the pool, or using an automatic doser, make sure the chlorine level does not exceed 2.5ppm.

Running the filter during the hottest part of the day circulates the hot water, that would normally stay at the top, and spreads it evenly around the pool.

» How hot will my pool get?

Over a period of about one week the water temperature will rise by 6-8o C above the normal water temp.

» How do I get the dirt off the cover?

Most of the dirt and leaves will get blown off the cover by the wind. Any debris left on the cover can be brushed off with a broom, or the pool brush, and gathered into a dustpan or swept into the skimmer box.

» Is the cover easy to handle?

A Solar Pool cover without a roller is quite a large piece of material, and in practical terms is much easier for two people to handle. You should have one person on either side and concertina the blanket on the ground, then fold the sides to the middle and pick it up ad store in the shade—not under shadecloth. If only one person is available, they should kneel at the end of the pool, lean out as far as possible, pick up the centre of the blanket and draw it towards themselves forming the concertina beneath their knees.

» Do I need a Roller System?

A Roller System makes using you Solar Pool Cover a more convenient. It allows and encourages you to use the blanket properly, easily and conveniently and gain the most from the benefits available. It will also prolong the life of your Solar Pool Cover

» How do I protect the blanket when it is off the pool?

If you have a Roller System, use the white overcover supplied each time you recover the blanket.

If you don’t have a Roller System, the blanket must be removed and placed completely in the shade. It must never—not even for a few minutes—be left in the sun when folded. This is because the heat generating effect of the blanket is magnified immensely when folded, and it will very quickly self-destruct. The results may not be immediately visible, but they can be very serious.

If the cover is left in the sun for any significant amount of time it can generate enough heat to weld it together, destroying the cover.

Should I take the blanket off if it gets too hot?

Yes. If the air temperature exceeds 35ºC, it is better to remove the cover and place it in a protected, cooler spot. If you have it on a roller with the overcover on and the temperature reaches this level, it is better to move the cover and roller into the shade.

» Will the blanket blow off?

As long as it is fitted properly and does not rise above the coping of the pool it will not blow off. When fitting the cover make sure you allow for shrinkage. The cover should extend up the walls of the pool by about 75mm.

» Do I have to cover all of the water?

It is best to cover all the pool. This stops any debris from getting into the water and also prevents the wind from getting under the cover and blowing it off the pool.
